Philips Wake-up Light is an innovative product that wakes users up natually by gradually increasing light levels. The last generation of the Wake-up Light was created in 2012 and since then it has not been updated. This project is to explore what the next generation wake-up experience could be. As the project is still on-going, the concepts shown below are two of my early concept created in the process.
In these two concepts I explored the idea of bringing back the classic bedside lamp shape design with modern twist and embedded technology. The intention of this design was for the users to replace their bedside lamp with this multi-functional wake-up light. The design uses a machined aluminum base (with integrated alarm speakers) and porcelain finished main body in reference to high quality home interior materials.
An intuitive twist switch is located on the light pole for adjusting light intensity or alarm volume based on mode selection.
The user interface display and touch control is housed in the base of the lamp. A LED panel lays flat underneath the translucent shade. The light sequence simulating the color of the sun rising glows through the shade, slowly changing from soft dawn reds to a warm daylight to provide a natural wake-up experience.
This second concept takes a slightly different form factor that resembles a reading lamp on the bedside table. The frame with its seamless transition from base to top is made from one piece high quality machined aluminum. The base of the lamp is slightly dished to provide a place to hold personal items such as phones, keys, wallet, etc.
Interactive user interface is located at the base. Users swipe around the circle to set up the alarm clock as the back lit dots simulate hour and minute handle. A similar idea to the first concept, the light sequence casts through the shades to provide a gradual wake-up to the sun experience.
