CONVERTIBLE MASK

Convertible Mask is a conceptual project that explores a modular mask system that offers sleep apnea patients the whole range of cushion options when use CPAP (Constant Positive Airway Pressure) machine. Traditionally,  CPAP users are prescribed a single mask solution that is either a full face (covers both nose and mouth) , nasal (covers only nose), or an alternative version (mask with nostrils that goes underneath the nose) based on the fit and comfort. When they have conditions prevent them breathing through nose or mouth, it's very inconvenient to use the CPAP therapy.

An important criteria for this project is to deliver a positive experience that supports confidence and ensure users maintain dignity during their daily lives. Taking inspiration from consumer lifestyle/ fashion accessory industry, this conceptual project experimented on bringing consumer products quality into a medical product: a design that  fits into users lifestyle and environment while maintaining a sense of medical trust .  The belief is that cues from fashion accessories can help diminish any social stigma associated with wearing a mask, thus allow users more confident while getting the therapy they need.

Early exploration focused on finding the right platform that allows the change of mask interface. Define the common connection  point, air path, and form language that is transferable across three different mask categories.

Different air paths were explored through rough CAD. Form was further refined. Mask to head band interface was further evolved to create a consistent language and fine detail across three different mask types.

The metalized frame and magnetic connections are the element that brings the system together. Users use the same headgear and connection points to connect with different types of masks. This allows the visual consistency and high quality feel as found in consumer wearable. The magnets connection also creates a simple interaction where you can swap between interfaces and easily remove the mask for cleaning.

In the patient interface market that is dominated by clear masks, the CMF of this mask design creates a clear differentiation by introducing new materials and finishes found in eye wear. This also opens a pathway for future personalization.
